Susan’s work organizes itself into distinct collections, each exploring different aspects of equine beauty. Colorful Coats represents some of her most visually striking work. She brings colored gels to the studio and plays with how different light colors interact with horse coats. The series works best with solid, neutral coats: blacks, bays, greys, cremellos.
“Lilac Fizz 1,” featuring a stallion from Texas, exemplifies the collection’s appeal. “He was spectacular,” Susan recalls. “I thought he was a very interesting horse with a lot of energy.” Because Susan can’t manipulate horses into poses, she relies on their authentic behavior to create compelling images, and this particular horse delivered candid moments that made the session exceptional.
