Campfire Beggars

A South Dakota photoshoot provided the foundation for “Campfire Beggars”. Showcasing a group of cowboys around a fire pit, you would never know the original photographs were taken in broad morning daylight. As Russell worked on the painting in his studio, he reimagined the scene at night with firelight as the primary source of illumination, a transformation he made to create a more dramatic atmosphere.

The biggest challenge became creating this lighting scheme entirely from imagination. Russell had to determine how the firelight would behave and where shadows would fall, relying on his technical understanding of light and artistic instincts to guide the work. The finished piece invites viewers into an intimate nighttime moment, where the warm glow of the fire ignites a scene rich with Western storytelling.
