Horses have been central to Cherie Ramdsell’s life for as long as she can remember. Her work honors the profound bond between humans, animals, and the land they share. Rooted in the history and landscape of South Dakota, Cherie creates contemporary ceramic works using an ancient tradition—burning horsehair into clay—to honor the spirit, movement, and presence of the horse.
Each piece serves as a vessel for memory. The smoke, carbon, and line patterns form instinctive rhythms—like breath, like motion—capturing the essence of a life deeply loved. Cherie incorporates materials unique to her region into the clay itself, grounding each work in place and heritage. Soft, glowing finishes emerge through waxed surfaces that resemble the organic patinas of wood or stone rather than traditional ceramic glazes, inviting touch and connection.
Her practice continues to evolve through the inlay of turquoise, the integration of wood, stone, wire, and sculptural forms that push the boundaries of tradition. Many of Cherie’s works are created as memorial commissions, shaped from stories shared by those grieving a companion who ran beside them through life. In these moments, she sees her role as listener, translator, and guardian of deeply personal connections.
